Roger P. Levin knew at an early age that he would follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and become a dentist. When he graduated from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 1982, he went into practice with his father, Dr. Jules Levin.

As he worked full-time with patients and learned how a successful dental office operated, he began writing articles for journals. He was particularly interested in the business of dentistry. He realized that dental schools weren’t able to spend time addressing the management, financial or marketing challenges of operating a practice.

Proving to be as much entrepreneur as dentist, Dr. Levin created his own company, called Healthcare Advancements, in 1985. Writing more and more, he added his first employee—who is still with the company today—in 1986. Moving beyond journal articles, Dr. Levin began publishing a newsletter appropriately named Modern Dental Practice. Book-length manuscripts were also in the works and he found himself advising fellow dentists about how to upgrade their business systems.

Originally housed in a small back office at the Levin dental practice, the fledgling consulting business moved to separate office space in the early ‘90s. By the time Dr. Jules retired in 1991, his son’s path was clear. Roger P. Levin, DDS, would devote his career to helping other dentists achieve professional and business success. The company name was changed to Levin Group, Inc.


Father and son traveled to major dental conferences and trade shows around the country, where Dr. Levin would speak and offer his books, tapes and videos to dentists and staff. In 1991, dentists began requesting comprehensive one-to-one consulting to improve the operation of their practices. He responded with a major innovation, creating the dental profession’s first consulting program for training staff and implementing highly effective business systems for every aspect of practice operations.

By 1993, the consulting business had grown so much that the first full-time practice consultant was hired, and a marketing specialist was added soon thereafter. Dr. Levin presented his first Levin Group Seminar to an audience of almost 40 dentists—in 1994. A resounding success, it was the first of many such events.


Growing rapidly on the strength of the original business idea, Levin Group needed more space. In 1997, a new headquarters facility was built in Owings Mills, Maryland. In 2004, with the number of employees, training programs and other services growing rapidly, the company added more space to its Owings Mills campus.

The year 2004 was significant in the history of Levin Group in other ways, too. It marked the introduction of Levin Financial Group to meet dentists’ unique needs for financial and retirement planning and wealth management. Transitions and other legal services were officially added to the roster of Levin Group services for dental professionals.

That was also the year when Dr. Roger P. Levin was honored with the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Consulting Services category. This coveted award was a testament to the company’s success in providing the very best service to dental practices and improving the lives of dentists and specialists.

Today, Levin Group has more than 40 employees, with offices and training facilities in Maryland , as well as a European affiliate office in Marseille, France. The company’s headquarters are in Owings Mills, Maryland, and feature state-of-the-art classrooms and learning labs where thousands of dentists and practice teams come to learn the most advanced management and marketing methodologies.

The company also operates the Levin Group Data Center, which conducts primary research into the business of dentistry and maintains extensive collections of data related to practice operation and growth.

Dr. Levin presents more than 80 intensive educational seminars and workshops to general dentists and specialists worldwide every year and is a guest speaker at major dental conferences.
