Periodically survey referring doctors to determine what insurance program they participate in. This will provide “intelligence” as to whether the practice is missing out on a certain number of referrals. It is not the referrals for that insurance plan that we are referring to. It is the referrals to other specialty practices that participate in those plans that gradually become most or all the referrals from a specific referring office. If a specialty practice finds that the majority of referring doctors are participating in a plan and a specialty practice is not, the specialty practice should analyze the facts and make a logic-based decision about whether to participate in the future.
